Karen McAthy

Co-Founder & Chief Executive Officer
Lumi Foods

Karen McAthy, co-founder and CEO of Lumi Foods (and it’s predecessor and now legacy brand Blue Heron), is an innovator in the vegan dairy and cultured vegan cheese space. Having begun her journey in this sector nearly 10 years ago, while still working as an executive chef, Karen has gone on to write an award-winning book on cultured vegan cheesemaking, “The Art of Plant-based Cheesemaking” and its second edition, as well as found Lumi Foods legacy vegan cheese brand, Blue Heron. Karen has centred her career around food, and food innovation, particularly within the plant-based food space.

With Blue Heron expanding across Canada, and soon the US and other markets, Lumi focuses on innovation within the plant-dairy, alternative dairy spaces, with respect to core ingredients, starter cultures, and utilization of technological developments as deemed relevant, and adding value, toward the goal of creating a vegan cheese sector that matches the diversity and richness of the traditional sector.
